NEW ADDRESS! So I guess you're wondering why there hasn't been any news since March. Maybe that's because our NEW ADDRESS is www.cguide.org. Check out the new site. It's actually *less* extensive, but hopefully that will encourage more people to use the new message board as well. That new address again is:

www.cguide.org

The cGuide/medmonkey.com now has its own online message boards. Post your own rants and raves, and see what others have to say.

Want advice from fourth-years? Check out "If I were starting over...", a new medmonkey.com feature; fourth-year medical students at Weill/Cornell contribute their advice as to what they'd do if they were starting over. Save yourself time and trouble, and check back with the "If I were starting over..." guide from time to time, as we get more contributions.

YourGrocer.com Review. Henry tried YourGrocer.com, a NYC grocery discount and delivery service. Read about his experience, and why you should or should not consider YourGrocer.com for your grocery needs, especially if you're thinking about cutting down on the time you spend food shopping as you go into a busy third and fourth year.

Dr. Mark Pochapin appears on Today Show. Dr. Mark Pochapin, a course director in the second-year Basis of Disease course, recently appeared on NBC to explain the need for early screening for colorectal cancer. Click here to find out more.

medmonkey.com: the new address for the cGuide

Starting basically now, you can access the cGuide just by going to medmonkey.com. No, it's probably not any more difficult to type in than cguide.8m.com, but it's easier to remember and tell your friends.

Update on Lasdon Ethernet!

A trusted source has provided information on the rollout of ethernet service in Lasdon:

  • Available within 1 month (by 3/10/00)
  • Students can expect to pay $300 (per year, we assume, and per jack, we assume also)
  • Wireless network is not allowed, a la Apple's new Airport nodes or the Farallon SkyLine cards

In other news, there's another NYC Grad School party coming up on Saturday, 2/26/2000, at Metronome (915 roadway @ 21st St.). It may go without saying that if you do decide to go, be prepared to wait in a ridiculously long line for a mediocre party, but with prime potential for being groped by horny, desperate graduate and professional students from NYU, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

I added a review of that Priceline online grocery discount thing you may have heard about. It's not that thorough, but make sure you read it right after you check out the PriceLine site itself.

AMSA-Cornell is still compiling a list of student groups with descriptions and contact information. If you haven't sent one in yet for your group, send it to hgw2001@mail.med.cornell.edu right away! A preliminary version is available right now.

I also recently acquired a digital camera (see example of photo above), so you'll be seeing a lot more random images of life at Cornell Med. I'll also write a review of my experience with digital photography sometime soon, but probably after tomorrow's Renal quiz.

Yes, the email system has supposedly been upgraded. For the official web page describing all the new passwords, etc., go to http://www.med.cornell.edu/oac/, the official page of the Office of Academic Computing. When you're done looking through the largely unhelpful documentation there, check out my guide to setting up an *outside* account at Yahoo!. Yahoo's stock price went up by over 60% in one week, in recent trading. By contrast, Cornell's email server continues to give the error message "All login sessions in use." You get the idea.

So have you heard about that place where you order groceries online, but pick them up at the store, at deep deep discounts? Well, word on the street is that some the Cornell med students have actually tried it (Priceline, that is), and oddly enough, it really works -- real big savings, no kidding. Basically, you name the price you want to pay for certain grocery items, anything from meat to OJ, whatever. If your bid is successful, they charge your credit card and you go and pick up the food (using a Priceline card which scans right through at the register so you don't actually pay there.) If it's not successful, no big deal -- just go to the store and buy the food like you would normally. Somewhat more complicated, but if you're into savings, and if you shop at Food Emporium or Gristede's (which most of us do), and live in New York City (which most of us do) then you're in luck.

Hey, Green Guild Members: In case you didn't notice, Dr. Cohen posted a few announcements on the Guild Website. Namely, that you can call Dr.Paul Miskovitz at 746-2121 to help him with an endoscopy, and you can call Dr. Robert Sasoon at 517-8333 to watch a delivery. If you do wind up calling, tell them you heard about it through the cGuide!

Congratulations to Ryan Romeiser, Cheryl Schreiber, Josh Silverman, Ameet Singh, Richard Wang, and Dr. Wellner for finishing the NYC Marathon yesterday! To check out official times, go to nycmarathon.msn.com.

11/09/99 Border Cafe: 79 between 2 and 3. I would recommend stopping your meal after the salsa and chips, both were excellent. The chips were warm and the salsa was full of fresh tomatoes and onions. My food was covered in pizza sauce rather than a tex mex sauce. Please stay away unless you are having drinks. (aje)

11/09/99 Second Ave Deli: 2 and 10. We celebrated Glenn's birthday finally and the food was hardly the best deli I have tasted in NYC. The matzo ball soup was only good and the corned beef was a little greasy. I recommend the Carnegie Deli instead. The sandwiches and soup are larger and better. (aje)

10/22/99 Vong 53 and 3: The best French Thai fusion meal I have ever eaten. This upscale midtown eatery was the perfect selection for a post anatomy celebration. The drinks were strong and tasty. The food was unique and tasty. I highly recommend any meal. Unfortunately this dinner was also the most expensive I have reviewed. I give the meal and service my top rating. Update: It is essential that you know that the company matched the food and I recommend only eating this type of meal with the right people. (aje)

10/27/99 EJ's Diner (3rd and 77th?): Good brunch/breakfast, but for dinner... good lord, no. Save your time and money and go to Cafe Lukka (71st and 1st) instead. Cafe Lukka is that one with the green neon sign in the window, and the waitstaff always seems exceptionally concerned (a good thing). (hgw)
