cGuide: old news / updates

September 9, 1999

Watch out! 9/9/99. Not since 1988 have we had such a unique numerical date. Anyhow, congratulations to the Second-Years for finishing their first Brain & Mind quiz. (Now maybe you guys can submit the stuff you promised to contribute to the cGuide!)

TODAY'S CONTROVERSY: Brain and Mind course directorship and administrators have repeatedly emphasized the importance of professional responsibility. Next week, a second-year will be penalized for participating in the Boston-New York AIDS Ride, an annual charity bike ride to raise funds for AIDS research, due to the absence from class and quiz time. What's your take on this? Send your comments webmaster@cguide.8m.com, and be sure to let us know if you want your comments to be anonymous. Or, alternatively: sign the guestbook, and then, after you're done, view the guestbook.

Rumor has it that even more faculty members have visited the cGuide website and looked over the pages. The academic fate of our editor-in-chief remains undetermined.

In any event, please be sure to check out the Community Service Projects 1999-2000 list, graciously provided by Malini Patel. It's chock full of all the community service projects at Cornell Med. along with contact information, if you weren't able to make the Community Service Fair last week. So, basically, get off your lazy, selfish ass and give something to the community, if you haven't already.

Incidentally, if you've been wondering what the deal is with renovations and the parking lot next to Olin Hall, the cGuide has rattled some information out of an anonymous employee: essentially, the medical school needs to figure out what its needs are *after* this coming year, as the Whitney Building opens back up and comes online and more research lab space becomes available and subsequently unavailable. For long term projections, though, you can anticipate that in roughly 10 years, the entire Olin/Livingston-Farrand/parking lot area will be transformed in some massive new way, pending more fundraising, etc. Sources say that the construction of better housing, more research facilities, and more educational facilities should attract more top faculty to Cornell. Yahoo -- but until then, we'll just wait and see how long it'll take for them just to reopen the Olin Gym (hopefully before the next millenium). Hint to the MD-PhD's: you have access to the Rockefeller Gym, don't you? ;)

Rumor has it that a certain faculty member with a hyphenated surname has visited the cGuide website and looked over the pages. We are happy to report that our editor-in-chief will still be able to finish second year medical school. Anyhow, regardless of who our visitors are, we encourage EVERYONE to sign our guestbook. You can take a look at the cGuide guestbook entries after you've signed in.

Congratulations to the first-years on getting through their first quiz and drinking all the champagne before the second-years had the chance to get any. By the way, if any of you are still looking to buy a copy of Stryer or other used textbooks, take a ride in our virtual elevator.

In the meantime, in addition to trying to expand the listings of student groups, we've been busy upgrading the look and design of the page to load really quickly so you spend less time fiddling with the web browser and more time actually reading the information. We also added a counter (at the bottom) and a site statistics tracker to see whether or not anyone's actually visiting the page. Not that this matters to you, really.

Don't forget Friday Night's weekly panel discussion in the Olin Courtyard, "The Hour of Content," with free beverages provided. Also, congratulations to the class of 2003, who have managed to collectively assemble more parties in their first weeks in Olin Hall than likely any class before them. As for updates to the cGuide, check out our guide to nightlife, a new section of the cGuide brought to you by Mode Gumpeni, one of the 2002 Social Chairs and also an international rare animal species smuggler.

Welcome, Class of 2003! Or at least that's what the banner says. What it should really say is "Welcome Class of 2003" and, in smaller print, "And MD-PhDs who will actually be here much longer but are still considered in your class because otherwise we'd have to try and predict how long it would take for them to finish their PhD thesis/dissertation." Anyhow, this site is not quite finished, but if you happened to get access to it somehow (cGuide launch date is actually in September), so much the better for you.

We're up and running with the new name, "C-Guide", due to copyright concerns with the original name "Unofficial Guide," a registered trademark for a series of travel guides which I just saw in a bookstore. Oops.

Anyhow, to get going, click on links on the menubar to your left. I think it's pretty straightforward, and if it isn't, you lose.
